Adoption From Taiwan

As many of you know, Superkids took a trip to Taiwan in April. This was the 4th time we have been able to visit our partnership agencies there. We have met so many adorable little ones and older ones on these trips!

The Taiwan program is a growing international adoption program. We have seen a steady increase in the number of children coming home from Taiwan since Superkids started visiting in 2015.

One of the great things about Taiwan is that families only need an international home study to be considered as a potential family for a child. You can see the list of guidelines for adopting from Taiwan here. If you are interested in a child you see us advocating for be sure to contact us and we can help you decide if Taiwan is a good fit for your family.

We have partnerships with 2 agencies in Taiwan and we receive referrals of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers from these partnerships. Most of the younger children have a medical need of some kind. We also receive referrals of older children, some with medical needs and some without. There are also sibling groups available for adoption.

The files of children from Taiwan generally contain a lot of information! There is often information about the child's biological family. The care the children in our partnership agencies receive is outstanding.

Misty {Taiwan}

Meet 6 year old Misty! She is an active, happy, and considerate little girl. Misty has been living with her foster family for several years and her foster mom told us that she is a “great child”! She told us that Misty is usually cheerful and can easily be cheered back up if she gets upset. 

Misty likes rolling skating, riding a bike with training wheels, dancing, and playing with her foster sister. And she loves dogs! During our meeting she was proud to show off a photo album she brought that showed her dressed up for dance performances.  

Misty has significant delays and only says a few words. She also has astigmatism, hyperopia, and amblyopia – she usually wears glasses but forgot to bring them with her the day we met. She currently attends kindergarten at a school that is well equipped to handle her needs.

Hawk

We have a darling little boy to introduce this morning. Hawk is almost 3 years old and is described as active and smiley.

He likes to play with toys that make noise and gets along well with other children. Hawk has repaired anal atresia, CHD, and a hand deformity. He seems to be doing well and it is noted that his hand deformity does not impede his ability to function.

He feeds himself small crackers and scribbles with a pen on paper. He crawls and sits independently, he walks and runs. He understands what is said to him and is able to speak and communicate his needs. He laughs easily and likes to dance to music.

Meet Morrie!

Sweet Morrie came into the room to meet us and was a little shy and quiet at first. After he figured out that we had fun games to share, he warmed up. He was amazing at the matching game! He also made sure that he was able to complete the picture he was coloring – he was intentional about taking his time and doing a good job of staying in the lines.

Morrie told us that he likes to play the “ghost chasing” game with his friends at kindergarten. This is a popular game for kids in Taiwan – someone pretends to be a ghost and chases all the humans, trying to catch them. Morrie told us proudly that he is always a human. He also told us that his favorite color is orange, he likes eating candy and cookies, and drawing.

Morrie will be turning 7 years old in September. When we met with Morrie in April, he was wearing a patch over his glasses to help with his strabismus. His profile discusses some potential additional needs.

Superkids in China and Taiwan

Following CCCWA’s announcement earlier this week a lot of families and advocates have been wondering how the suspension of partnerships and other hosting and camp programs will impact China adoptions and Gladney’s Superkids work.

Although the future isn’t crystal clear at this moment, we are confident that the program will continue to move forward.  Gladney has been working in China for over 20 years and we have seen many changes – we have always been able to flow with whatever comes our way and we will continue to work to place children in loving, committed families. 

Superkids may be primarily known for work we do in China, however over the last couple of years it has expanded to include visits to Taiwan as well.  The Taiwan program is a small, but rapidly growing Asian adoption program for families that are interested in siblings, younger children with medical needs and older children (ages 5+) with and without medical needs.  The parent qualifications, process and requirements are slightly different from China.

Often we receive emails from our partners in Taiwan about children that are available to be matched to qualified families who have an approved international adoption home study.  Just yesterday we learned about a little boy who is turning 5 this fall, who they will be planning to match soon.  To learn more about this situation and other opportunities in the Taiwan program please contact mary.chapman@gladney.org.

As we close this week we remain hopeful for each individual child’s future and optimistic that Superkids will continue to have a positive impact in the lives of orphans in both China and Taiwan!
